What is the difference between hard bop and bebop

The size and instrumentation of hard bop combos was similar to that of its bebop forbearer: usually two or three horns plus rhythm section. The most important hard bop group was the Miles Davis Quintet of the mid s. There are dozens of important hard bop musicians; in fact, hard bop is the main style and influence of most jazz played and heard today. In addition to Miles Davis , a few of the most important hard bop musicians in jazz history include:. Hard bop, in part, was a means of artistic expression by young African American men to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the social, political, and economic climate of America at that time, i.

As in all major northern cities, New York experienced an increasing African American population, making it an ideal backdrop and fertile breeding ground for hard bop. Cool Jazz. Hard Bop. Student Handout. Test Bank. Answer Key. Hard Bop Miles Davis. Jimmy Heath. Wes Montgomery. Clifford Brown. I have a separate lesson on Cool Jazz which discusses this genre in detail. But in short, throughout most of Jazz History there have been two countervailing forces pulling on it.

Well, Cool Jazz was the former. It was heavily influenced by the European Classical Music tradition. It was more restrained and less emotional , it relied more on composition than improvisation , and it was softer and more polite.

So Hard bop was partly a reaction to this trend towards the Classical influenced Cool Jazz, and decidedly tried to pull Jazz back towards its roots — back towards Blues. So there was the rise of:. Before bebop there was Swing, which was melodic, danceable, and popular music. Bebop turned Jazz into art music — with angular and difficult melodies, fast tempos, complex harmonies and fast chord changes.

Hard bop to me is a more edgy, less polite, saltier, form of bebop.

I've always though of avante garde as whatever was extremely experimental for the time but I've always thought of it as also having a structure even if that structure is very complicated or convoluted. Just going off the deep end without any structure never struck me as being "avante garde".

I would think Modal was avante garde when it first came out but is now a specific style. Mitkraft , Jan 20, Messages: Bebop - During the swing era it emerged with more of a focus on improvisation and was usually played by smaller groups trios to quintets instead of big bands.
